If one bites you, the advice is to make the most noise possible and work hard to get away. If you look closely at a picture of an alligator or crocodile, you may notice small, black dots covering their jaws. When agitated, crocodiles and alligators may let out a deep growl or a loud hiss. It’s often a sign to back off or to show they don’t like you. Crocodiles will also flee, but are more likely to react defensively if they are cornered. A dog’s growl, generally, is a friendly sound. In fact, dogs and cats are most notorious for growling.
When it comes to encounters with alligators, the best possible advice is to try your best not to have those encounters by staying a safe distance of at least 50 feet away. Alligator’s may use these types of noises when they feel threatened or are acting aggressively to try and protect themselves or their young. As the population increases, the swamplands, once patrolled mostly by reptiles and nature’s creatures, become less and less and the possibility of animal encounters increases. The best way to describe these noises is a rumbling bellow or a deep growl, almost resembling an echo. As locals and tourists continue to flock to the region to live, retire and vacation, more and more homes and resorts spring into action. Female alligators also have longer, sharper claws than male alligators. The scutes on a female alligator ‘s back are larger and more pronounced than those on a male alligator’s back.
Alligators live about as long as humans and average 70 years, but can be 100 years old, if they can survive a difficult life which starts with biting and fighting that never ends. The record alligator taken in Louisiana was 19 feet 2 inches. Florida, the 27th state, is the most southeasterly state in the entire United States. Alligators are reptiles and as such, they are covered in scutes, or bony plates, which protect their backs and bellies.
